Why Your Business Needs to Be Online (And No, It’s Not Just About Looking Cool)

Can we have a proper chat about something that’s been on my mind lately? I’ve been hearing from so many brilliant women who are absolutely smashing it in their businesses, but they’re still treating their online presence like it’s some sort of optional extra. Like adding avocado to your toast, nice to have, but not essential.

Well, ladies, I’m here to tell you that in 2025, having a solid digital presence isn’t the avocado on your business toast, it’s the bloody toast itself!

The Numbers Don’t Lie (And Neither Do I)

Here’s the tea: 73% of small businesses now have websites. That means if you don’t, you’re in the minority and not the good kind. It’s like showing up to a Zoom meeting with your camera off whilst everyone else is fully made up and ready to go. You’re there, but are you really there?

And before you start thinking “but my customers aren’t online”, they absolutely are. Your ideal client is scrolling through Instagram whilst waiting for her coffee, checking Facebook during her lunch break, and Googling solutions to her problems at 11 PM when she can’t sleep. If you’re not there when she’s looking, guess who she’s finding instead? Your competition.

Social Media: Your New Best Friend (Who Actually Helps Your Business)

I know, I know. Social media can feel overwhelming. One minute you’re posting a cute cat, the next you’re supposed to be doing some trendy dance to sell your services. But here’s the thing, you don’t need to be the next TikTok sensation to make social media work for you.

Think of social media as your shop window, your networking event, and your customer service desk all rolled into one. It’s where you get to show the personality behind your brand, share your expertise, and actually connect with real humans who might become your dream clients.

Instagram is perfect for showing the beautiful side of your business. Think behind-the-scenes content, client transformations, and those satisfying before-and-after shots we all love.

Facebook is brilliant for building communities and having proper conversations. It’s where your clients are chatting about their problems, problems you can solve!

LinkedIn might seem a bit corporate and stuffy, but it’s gold for B2B businesses. If you’re selling to other business owners, this is where they’re hanging out in their professional mindset.

Your Website: Your Digital Headquarters

Your website isn’t just a pretty brochure anymore (though it should still be pretty, obviously). It’s your 24/7 salesperson, your credibility booster, and your conversion machine all in one.

Think about it, when someone hears about your business, what’s the first thing they do? They ask ChatGPT or Google you. And if they can’t find you, or if what they find looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2010, what impression does that give?

Your website needs to:

  • Tell people exactly what you do and who you help
  • Show off your personality (because people buy from people they like)
  • Make it stupidly easy for potential clients to get in touch
  • Actually work properly on mobile (seriously, test this!)

Email Marketing: The Underrated Hero

I’m going to let you in on a secret that the social media gurus don’t want you to know: email marketing still has the highest ROI of any digital marketing channel. Whilst everyone’s obsessing over follower counts, the smart cookies are building email lists.

Why? Because your email list is yours. Instagram could disappear tomorrow (heaven forbid), but your email list comes with you. Plus, people who sign up for your emails have basically put their hand up and said “yes, I want to hear from you” and that’s marketing gold.

But I’m Not Tech-Savvy!

Stop right there. I hear this excuse more than I hear “sorry, I’m washing my hair” on a Friday night. You don’t need to be the next Steve Jobs to have a decent online presence.

There are tools that make everything easier:

  • Canva for creating gorgeous graphics (even if you can barely draw a stick figure)
  • Squarespace or WordPress for websites that look like you paid thousands
  • Mailchimp for email marketing that doesn’t require a computer science degree
  • Hootsuite or Later for scheduling social media posts so you’re not glued to your phone 24/7

The Bottom Line (Because We’re All Business Women Here)

Your digital presence isn’t about being perfect or having thousands of followers. It’s about being findable, credible, and connectable. It’s about meeting your ideal clients where they already are, rather than hoping they’ll stumble across you by accident.

In 2025, having a strong online presence isn’t about keeping up with the cool kids, it’s about keeping up with your customers’ expectations. And trust me, they expect to find you online.

So, what’s it going to be? Are you going to embrace the digital world and watch your business flourish, or are you going to keep hiding behind “I’m not good with technology” whilst your competitors scoop up your dream clients?

I know which one I’d choose. And I know you’re clever enough to make the right decision too.

Now, go forth and get digital, you brilliant woman.
